Fitness + Health
By Stephanie of Infinite Life Fitness
When it comes to achieving your health and fitness goals, working out is only HALF of the battle. The most important thing that you HAVE to change is your diet.
For instance…I had a friend who came to me for health and fitness advice. She was gaining weight BUT she was working out 4 to 5 days a week. For a whole week I told her to write down what she did for exercise and to keep a food log of everything that she ate during that week. I took a look at her workout routine and it was a high intensity workout routine which included lifting weights 3 days a week. I then took a look at her diet and that is when I knew what the problem was. She would have these amazing workouts but then go enjoy Philly cheese steak sandwiches and meat lover’s pizzas before and after her workouts.
You cannot expect to see positive health and fitness results if you continue to eat junk food, greasy food, or highly processed foods. I have tried altering the way the people I help think about eating healthier. Instead of using the phrase “you are on a diet”…I like to use “You are eating healthy”.
I DO NOT like the phrase “I am on a diet”. Eating healthy is a lifestyle…not a fad that you will do for a few weeks and then go back to eating all the crappy food you were eating before. There are TONS of healthy clean foods that taste just as good as the junk food you use to eat. You just have to find out what YOU like and stick to having them in your menu.
What is eating Healthy?
This is when you supplement your meals with natural foods. Foods that are not highly processed, low in fats and sugars, and optimal fuel for your body. These types of food include fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, and lean proteins. You can start to eat better by purchasing, cooking, and eating more fresh fruits and vegetables. You can cook meals with whole grains and lean meats. This will also include snacking on healthier meals and consuming MORE water during the day.
I assure you, your health and fitness goals with be so much easier if you decide to adopt a healthier menu than what most people tend to eat. It is OK to cheat and have your favorite piece of cake or other treats…but this should be done as little as possible (like once every 4 weeks!).
YES…this will be hard to do at first. But, if you stick to it, the easier it is to turn down those less healthy food options. To help you get in the habit of eating healthy, try not to keep “bad” food around you (in your kitchen, at your work, etc.). Try to keep only the healthy options you can eat around. When you go out to eat, make sure that the place you are eating has meal options that have fresh entrees.

Fitness Motivation
By Stephanie of Infinite Life Fitness
Staying motivated to achieve your health and fitness goals can sometime be very hard to do!
You have to find something that will motivate you to keep pushing to achieve your goals. Whether it is a treat…a shopping spree at the mall…a trip someplace…or quotes that you look at…you should have something as motivation to get your workout done or to eat healthy that day. These kinds of visual aids have been found to be very influential for people when they are not feeling up to completing their goals. Sometimes these visual aids give you that extra push that you need to keep you dedicated and motivated to obtain your goals. Not just health and fitness goals, but they can be very influential and helpful with your personal life goals as well!
Today I would like to share some quotes that you may find useful to help YOU with your health and fitness goals. There are many different useful websites that you can use to find other helpful motivational tools. But, I found a few that I have recommended to peers and they seem to like these best.
I hope that you are able to find some of these helpful if not useful! Remember, half of the battle is mental! If you can stay mentally strong and dedicated, this will make achieving your goals that much easier. Dig deep and work hard this week!

Healthy Hair Feature: Ijeoma Eboh, aka KlassyKinks
1) Are you natural, relaxed, texlaxed, or transitioning? (And how long?)
I have been natural since May 2010, so I’m now officially two years natural! I transitioned for about a year, and wore kinky twists and weaves while slowly cutting off the relaxed ends in between styles.
2) What mistakes have you made in your hair care journey?
When I first BC’ed, I didn’t get a trim for 8 months, and then had to get a serious haircut. I still don’t trim often enough because I would get caught up with school, but I’m starting to realize a little hair off here and there is better than 2 or 3 inches of hard-earned growth having to be chopped off! In addition, constantly comparing my hair texture and length to natural hair gurus on YouTube set me back in my journey because I was more focused on trying to achieve certain styles than on learning what was best for my hair.
3) What is your current HEALTHY HAIR routine?
I co-wash my hair every two weeks (three in the winter) with Aussie Moist conditioner, and moisturize and seal with shea butter and coconut oil. Once a month, I shampoo with Giovanni 50/50 Balanced Shampoo, and deep condition with Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayo. After washing, I either do a twist or flat twist set, which I pin up for a week before untwisting, or I blow-dry my hair using heat protectant and do a braidout. Nightly, I sleep with a silk scarf or bonnet, and a satin pillow case.
4) Do you have a HEALTHY BODY routine? If so, what is it?
When I do have a healthy body routine, I try to work out 3-4 times a week by doing pilates, Zuumba, strength and cardio combo conditioning (aka my favorite Jillian Michaels DVD), or the elliptical. As a hungry college student, it’s often hard to regulate my dietary intake, but I try to have fruits or vegetables make up half of my plate and I only drink water. I also love sleep, and make sure I get lots of it.
5) Do you have any advice for those seeking healthy tresses?
I’d say just love your hair and it will love you back. If I neglect my hair, it rebels against me, but when I care for it properly, it is well-moisturized, happy, and it grows. Also, find what styles work for your hair type, skill set, and lifestyle--and stick to them. Don’t feel like you have to wear a twistout or wash and go all the time because everyone on Youtube is doing it. Do what makes your hair happiest, and it will respond positively.
6) Where can we find you?
I’m on Youtube at www.youtube.com/user/ije1023, and I also have a tumblr with countless photos of natural-haired beauties called klassykinks.tumblr.com. Come check them out!

Type 4 Series: Curly Girl Method & Summer Hair
What is the Curly Girl Method? It is method developed by Lorraine Massey and Deborah Chiel to help care for curly hair. The method entails frequent co-washing, finger combing, wash-n-gos, no shampoo, no silicones, and more. While many curly ladies have caught onto the routine, it is rare to find a kinky-haired gal who has, largely because of the regular wash-n-gos and co-washes involved. But on youtube, there are a couple of kinky gals who are experimenting with the method and one who actually has very similar routine. These women are featured in the videos below, and can perhaps be inspiration to those with type 4 hair who desire to wash more frequently and wear their hair loose this summer.
For a more detailed description of the method, check out their book titled "Curly Girl: The Handbook". For a short description of the no-shampoo routine involved in the Curly Girl Method, check out this article.
1. Though she didn't exactly use the Curly Girl Method, Cynthiarf was the Type 4 Queen of wash-n-gos, frequent co-washes, and finger combing, which are components of the regimen: video tutorial.
3. Though not entirely Type 4, Whoissugar has mix of textures varying from tight coils to loose curls and is worth posting for those with looser Type 4 hair. She is also experimenting with the Curly Girl Method; you can watch her document her journey on youtube.

3in6: Starting Month #5
For the challenge guidelines, see this post.
This 3in6 Challenge is going by fast! We are now in month #5. Last month, I wore medium-small twists for a couple weeks and a twistout for one week. (See the photo to the right for twistout bun.) I've officially used up my allowance (i.e., out hair) passes. This month it's back to my trusty medium-small twists. I also stayed on top of my internal regimen: intake of multivitamins, water, and veggies/fruits.
How did your hair and internal regimen fair last month? What style will you wear this month?

Nutritious Bartending || The Healthier Sangria
Here are two different recipes for a healthier sangria:
LOW SUGAR SANGRIA (Source)
Ingredients
1 Bottle of red wine
1 Lemon cut into wedges
1 Lime cut into wedges
1 Orange cut into wedges
3/4 cup of raspberries or strawberries
2/3 cups agave nectar as a sugar substitute
2 cups sparkling water or club soda (this has no sugar, compared to ginger ale)
Instructions
Once you have your ingredients together, you'll need a large glass pitcher to mix them in. Start by pouring the wine into the pitcher. After the whole bottle is in your pitcher, squeeze in the juice from your fruit wedges, then drop them in whole. Once you have all of your fruit wedges in the pitcher, add in the agave nectar to sweeten it up, and mix well before refrigerating. For best results, you'll want to refrigerate for about 24 hours. This will allow the fruit juices to permeate the wine, and the sugar to mix in completely. Wait until just before serving to add in the club soda and your more delicate fruits like berries, peaches or apples. This will make sure the club soda stays fizzy and your fruit won't get soggy.
Video demonstration for this recipe.
HIGH ANTIOXIDANT SANGRIA (Source)
Ingredients
1 cup pomegranate juice, chilled
1 (750 ml) bottle red wine, chilled
1 cup fresh orange juice
1/2 cup red seedless grapes, frozen
1 orange, thinly sliced
1 lime, thinly sliced
1 cup club soda, chilled (or seltzer water)
Instructions
Combine first 6 ingredients in a large pitcher. Let chill in refrigerator for 1 hour. Stir in seltzer/club soda, and pour into ice-filled glasses. Enjoy!
